Saudi Arabia’s healthcare transformation is underway on a historic scale. At the Leaders Summit, held during the Global Health Exhibition 2024, a prestigious panel of experts convened under the theme “Innovating Saudi Arabia’s Healthcare: Vision 2030 and Beyond.” The session showcased how healthcare institutions across Saudi Arabia are embracing bold innovations, advanced technologies and forward-thinking strategies to build a world-class healthcare system.
From pioneering robotic surgeries to building futuristic health cities from the ground up, Saudi Arabia is reshaping the global narrative around healthcare delivery, leadership and ambition.
His Excellency Dr. Majid Alfayyadh, Chief Executive Officer of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC), highlighted a globally historic achievement: the world's first fully robotic heart transplant, preceded by the world’s first fully robotic liver transplant.
These complex procedures were not only technological feats, but also the result of years of meticulous planning, training and team development. The success was enabled by strategic integration of robotic technologies into surgical practice—an initiative aligned with Vision 2030’s drive toward smarter, safer and more efficient healthcare.
Dr. Majid Alfayyadh emphasised that such success stemmed not merely from cutting-edge tools, but from a collaborative team culture, continuous talent development and a mindset that embraces calculated risks. He noted that these procedures have sparked a broader wave of innovation across departments, further fuelling Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a global medical leader.
While surgical innovation pushes clinical frontiers, futuristic urban development is shaping healthcare from a preventative perspective. Dr. Mahmoud Al Yamany, Sector Head for Health & Wellbeing at NEOM, shared the health strategy for this visionary city.
NEOM’s model does not begin with hospitals; it begins with individuals. The strategy aims to identify health risks before they manifest, using artificial intelligence, genomic data, quantum computing and behavioural analytics. Unlike traditional systems that intervene after illness arises, NEOM seeks to predict and prevent disease decades in advance.
This proactive model is designed to personalise prevention and treatment, leveraging the full spectrum of health data to optimise outcomes. Despite the focus on prevention, NEOM is also building highly advanced care facilities to bridge the gap when intervention becomes necessary.
Education and workforce training are key enablers, with tailored programmes ensuring that health professionals of tomorrow are fluent in data science, digital health and precision medicine.
Prof. Saleh Zaid Almuhsen outlined the Ministry of Interior’s ambitious expansion of its medical services - one of the most rapidly growing healthcare systems in the region. Currently serving 5 to 6 million beneficiaries, the system is scaling up its primary care network from 20 to over 150 centres, each connected to a central hospital through a regional cluster model.
This expansion is matched by a digital strategy that emphasises smart, connected systems to maximise efficiency and access. Mental health, often underrepresented, has emerged as a focal point, with the launch of Centres of Excellence in Mental Health and Neurosciences.
The strategy includes mobile oncology services and collaboration with national and international experts in gene therapy and cell therapy. Significant investment is also being directed toward scholarships and talent development in areas such as AI, health economics, and logistics - reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of healthcare transformation.
Dr. Khalid Al Shaibani, CEO of the Health Sector Transformation Programme, shared insights into the most comprehensive transformation of a healthcare system currently underway globally. Saudi Arabia’s approach differs in scale and ambition, shaped by long-term leadership vision and a commitment to whole-sector reform.
Key shifts include a movement away from “sick care” toward holistic well-being, greater accountability for health outcomes, and integrated care models where providers are responsible for the full wellness journey of individuals. Regulatory reform is enabling agility and investment, with the Ministry of Health evolving into a super-regulator supported by specialised authorities.
Workforce development is again a central theme. The transformation is cultivating an environment that attracts world-class researchers and clinicians - many of whom are returning to Saudi Arabia after building careers abroad, inspired by the opportunities now available.
With Saudi’s demographic profile evolving rapidly - especially the projected fourfold increase in the population aged over 60 by 2040 - workforce planning is paramount. As highlighted by Dr. Aws bin Ibrahim Al-Shamsan, Secretary General of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialities, the country is investing in future-ready health professionals trained in genomics, digital health and emerging medical technologies.
This alignment between workforce strategy and technological innovation ensures that Saudi Arabia is not only adopting global best practices, but actively setting new benchmarks for excellence in healthcare delivery.
The initiatives discussed at the Leaders Summit are more than vision statements—they are active, evolving transformations. From robotic surgeries to AI-driven prevention and smart cities, Saudi Arabia is delivering on the promises of Vision 2030 with tangible outcomes and world-first achievements.
Global Health Exhibition 2025 invites healthcare leaders, innovators, and professionals from across the globe to witness and contribute to this unprecedented journey. As the Kingdom continues to pioneer the future of healthcare, this is the time—and the place—to engage, collaborate and inspire.
