SCIENTIFIC WRITING & PUBLISHING MASTERCLASS

Overview:

The Scientific Writing and Publishing Masterclass coverd the basic principles of medical writing, different types of medical writing, the latest guidelines by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) on authorship, and how to write a scientific paper discussing details required in different sections of a manuscript. The masterclass would be CME-accredited.

The participants were encouraged to actively participate in the deliberations to make it interactive and interesting. It helped the participants to get published in high quality standard peer-reviewed Impact Factor Journals.

The masterclass also involved hands-on-training exercises to assess how much knowledge the participants of the workshops have gained.

Objectives:

  • To promote scientific writing skills among healthcare professionals
  • To familiarize participants with concepts and issues related to scientific writing (e.g. authorship criteria, publication ethics, submission guidelines)

Expected outcomes:

  • To improve the quality of scientific writing by health professionals, which could result in better scientific articles published from the region
  • To increase the understanding of scientific writers regarding the processes involved in submission as well as publication of manuscripts
  • To gain a better understanding of ethics of conduct and publishing health research, in order to refrain from practices that are unacceptable and can lead to retraction of articles

Who should attend:

The masterclass is open to all health professionals, including physicians, health researchers, allied healthcare professionals and young professionals.

Meet the Masterclass Leaders:

 

  • Ahmed Mandil

Ahmed Mandil is Coordinator, Research Development & Innovation, WHO/EMRO, Cairo, Egypt (seconded from the High Institute of Public Health, University of Alexandria, where he is Prof of Epidemiology). He received his bachelor in medicine and surgery (1981) and masters in Pediatrics (1985) from Alexandria University, Egypt. Subsequently, he received his Doctorate in Public Health from the UCLA School of Public Health, USA (1991). He was Dean, College of Health Sciences, University of Sharjah, UAE (2004-2006); Secretary, International Epidemiological Association (2002-2008); Professor of Community Medicine, King Saud University (2008-2014). He currently serves as board member / peer reviewer of scientific journals including: WHO Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal (EMHJ), Journal of Epidemiology & Global Health (JEGH), and Journal of Family & Community Medicine (JFCM). He has more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals; contributed to books as “Public Health in the Arab World” (2012) and “Development of Modern Epidemiology” (2007).

 

  • Shaukat Ali Jawaid

Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid is one of the senior most medical journalists of Pakistan. He is Chief Editor Professional Medical Publications, publishers of Pakistan’s most widely read medical periodical fortnightly “Pulse” International and Bi-monthly “Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences” an international peer reviewed Impact Factor Journal published from Pakistan. He is working in this field since 1966.

He has to his credit seventy-five scientific papers published in national and international peer reviewed medical journals. He is author and co-author of twenty-three books on different topics including Medical Writing, Aspirin the lifesaving miracle drug, Medical Men and Women of Pakistan. He published his autobiography “Plight of a Medical Editor” in July 2015.  His recent book “Scientific Writing: A Guide to the Art of Medical Writing and Scientific Publishing” was published in June 2018. Apart from medial journalism he is interested in ethical issues related to health services in general and ethical medical practice in particular. He was one of the co-authors of Book “Medical Ethics in the Contemporary Era” published in 1995. He was the founder member of National Bioethics Committee (NBC) formed by Government of Pakistan and retired in 2014 after completing two terms of five years each.

He has been conducting workshops on Medical Writing, Peer Review and Medical Ethics in Pakistan besides numerous other countries in the region.  He was facilitator at numerous training courses for Medical Editors in Pakistan and Iran on How to publish and run a successful Journal.

He was founder President of Pakistan Medical Journalists Association, is Founder Member of Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME) and founder member of Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors (EMAME). In December 2010 he was elected as Secretary General of EMAME and re-elected to this post for another term at EMAME conference held at Shiraz, Iran in 2014.
